Born in 1957 in Delhi obtained Masters and PhD in Plant Physiology from IARI, New Delhi. Since 1983, he is with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and currently Director, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad.
He has held important positions of Dean, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun (2004-2010), Director-in-Charge, UN Centre of Space Science and Technology Education in Asia Pacific (UN-CSSTE-AP) (2005-06, 2009-10) and Head, Crop Inventory & Modeling Division (1998-2004), Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad.
His research activities include several key areas in remote sensing applications e.g., crop modeling, agricultural remote sensing, bio-geochemical cycle of carbon, land use land cover change, hydrological modeling and land surface processes. He has guided seven PhD students and published more than 150 peer reviewed journals papers.
He is Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences(NAS), New Delhi and Corresponding Member, International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and winner of many national awards by scientific societies. He is President, Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS, 2012-14) and Editor, Journal of Indian Society of Remote Sensing. He is also President, Technical Commission VIII of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (Remote Sensing Applications and Policies, 2012-16).
