Overview

CANEUS workshops are dedicated to fostering international collaboration on the development of advanced micro and nanotechnologies (MNT) from concepts to ultimate infusion into next generation aerospace systems. The CANEUS Workshops take a practical approach to efficiently overcoming the challenges associated with matching aerospace application needs with the new capabilities offered by emerging micro and nanotechnologies. The workshop program emphasizes measurable deliverables with lasting impact for the aerospace industry.

Over 250 world experts from Europe, the Americas, and Asia participated in previous CANEUS Conferences and Workshops to address the current and future needs of the aerospace industry, state of the art in micro and nanotechnologies, government and private investment for concepts-to-systems development, and policies such as ITAR and export control regulations that affect international collaborations.

Objectives

The primary objective of the CANEUS 2010 Workshops is to oversee the formation of international public/private partnerships within the space community by fostering a collaborative environment aimed at the adoption, adaptation, and accelerated commercialization of micro and nano technologies.

The CANEUS Workshops are chartered to oversee the formation of international public/private partnerships within the aerospace community by fostering a collaborative environment aimed at the adoption, adaptation, and accelerated commercialization of micro and nanotechnologies. These international public/private partnerships between industry, university, and government stakeholders pool membership’s resources to define and execute high-risk, high-cost projects and initiatives. Sector Consortia thus constitute smoothly functioning development “pipelines” for emerging technology concepts.

CANEUS currently coordinates Sector Consortia dedicated to Small Satellites, Reliability, Fly-by-Wireless (with Structural Vehicle Health Monitoring), Devices (with Harsh Environment Sensors, Optoelectronics, and Environmental Monitoring), and Materials (with Micro-Energetics).

The CANEUS Workshops aims to:

  • Provide participants and potential team members with an interactive in-depth assessment of current aerospace end-user needs as well as state-of-the-art developments in micro and nano technologies.
  • Articulate well-defined technology infusion projects and create their implementation plans within each of the Sector Consortia through the leadership of Sector Consortia Directors and the active contributions of participants
  • Facilitate public and private partnership by addressing challenges to collaborative innovation: Issues to be discussed include Intellectual Property, Funding Mechanisms, Export Control, and other regulations affecting International Collaboration
  • Build upon the achievements of the previous CANEUS Workshop held in 2009 at NASA Ames.
