The thrust level, accuracy and precision of a micro thrusters product depend on the characteristics of the space mission and spacecraft. From literature that impulse bit force values range from 10-6 Ns to 10-3 Ns for satellites with masses ranging between 1-20kg. Janson et al have estimated an impulse bit of 10-4 Ns and a thrust level of 20mN for a one-week COSA mission (Co Orbital Satellite Assistant) operating in a Low Earth Orbit. The impulse bit and thrust levels decrease down to 5´10-6 Ns and 1mN respectively, when the same satellite operates at Geostationary Earth Orbit.
Also, the choice of application of a micro propulsion technology is to be optimized based on mission parameters such as the required accuracy of station-keeping and attitude control for micro-spacecraft. In this Project Workshop, we will discuss the customer needs for civilian and military space applications and propose the requirements for the potential micro thruster product.
We will also examine end-user requirements for low mass, high energy density storage systems and look to MNT-based batteries for providing the necessary solutions.
