The exhibition centre is strategically located at the foot of the Apuan Alps and Carrara, the world centre for the quarrying and processing of marble, Carrara’s “white gold”.

The setting of the marble quarries is quite unique and of incomparable beauty. A visit to the quarries is an incredible journey through the history of quarrying techniques over the ages. Yet there is much more to see in the mountains: the Apuan park has superb trails for guided and individual trekking excursions on foot and on horseback to see breathtaking views in places such as Campocecina and nature havens such as the botanical gardens in Pian della Fioba.

The marble museum in Carrara contains extensive documentation of the marble quarrying and processing industry over the centuries of great historical interest and value.

In the town centre, in addition to the Romanic Cathedral and the Fine Arts Academy housed in the old Malaspina fortress, there is Piazza Alberica, a unique square paved in white marble and sandstone, featuring the emblem of Carrara.

In the nearby town of Massa is the old Malaspina castle and within easy reach are the Lunigiana castles well known for their wealth of history and the green valleys of the Garfagnana.
