PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
2009 to date: Head of the Space Research and Development Unit of the Commission’s Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General.
2004 to 2007: Head of the Automotive Industry Unit of DG ENTR, responsible for regulations relating to vehicle safety and the protection of the environment, e.g. the recent Euro 5 and 6 emission standards. The position comprises representation of the Commission in the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations in Geneva (UN/ECE) where vehicle type approval is being regulated on a worldwide scale.
2000 to 2004: Head of Unit “Chemicals” in DG Enterprise, responsible i.a. for legislation on dangerous substances (including the REACH proposal), detergents, fertilisers and drug precursors.
1998-1999: Head of Unit “Promotion of the interests of SMEs in Community policies and programmes”, responsible i.a. for the Commission’s proposal of a Directive combating late payment.
1992-1998: Head of Unit “General Enterprise Policy/Improvement of the Business Environment”, responsible i.a. for the simplification of the regulatory environment of SMEs and for policy development in areas such as late payment, transfer of enterprises from one generation to the next, access of SMEs to sources of finance, the coordination of the Commission’s business impact assessment system and measures to facilitate the introduction of the Euro with SMEs.
1990-1992: Assistant to the Director-General of DG Enterprise Policy, Commerce, Tourism and Co-operatives.
1989-1990: Member of the Directorate for Telecommunications Policy in DG Information Society, responsible i.a. for the deregulation of the telecommunications industry, the Commission’s green paper on satellite policy, the terminal equipment Directive and the telecommunications services Directive.
1986-1989: Member of the office of Commission Vice-President Narjes, responsible i.a. for internal market issues, transport policy and the abolition of the steel quota system.
1981-1986: Official in the Directorate-General of Competition, responsible i.a. for cases against the post and telecommunication monopolies.
1981: Member of the law department of Munich Reinsurance Company.
1977-1980: Assistant at the Institute for International Private and Commercial Law, University of Göttingen.
