Dear Colleagues,

The city of Toulouse offers endless possibilities for all attendees to enjoy. From visits to historical treasures, museums, and the Cité de l'Espace to the amazing nightlife, the city abounds with unique discoveries and countless experiences that should not be missed. Breathtaking tours and regional sights also deserve to be discovered, such as the Medieval City of Carcassone, the Minervois, the Pyrenees or the oldest cloister in the world in Moissac (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The following suggestions and tempting possibilities are all available from the “Discovering” webpage of the Toulouse Tourist Office and provide you with a wide range of visits and locations to assist you in finalising your travel arrangements.

For your general information the following are a number of sights, museums and activities in and around the City available for all every day:

The city of Toulouse has, with the passing centuries, become home to a growing collection of monuments, fine edifices and works of art, which stand as witnesses of its diverse culture and profuse history.

Museums

Situated in superb buildings, the Museums of the city offer a wide range of collections presenting different facets of History: real history, the history of Man, of Art, and of different cultures.

Markets

Emblematic of French summer days, Toulouse offers a number of markets where you can stimulate your senses and enjoy the city's traditional foods and specialties. Markets can be in indoors (in “Les halles” ) or outdoors, every day of the week.

• Les halles Victor Hugo : known as the temple of the « gastronomie Toulousaine », it includes an entire floor of restaurants where you can lunch for an unbeatable price and taste. • Les halles Saint Cyprien , smaller but just as typical. • Les halles des Carmes. • Les Boulevards (between blvd Arnaud Bernard and blvd Jeanne d'Arc), the most popular site in the city with the best bargains. • Saint Aubin : Sundays only. •

The Lighting Plan, Toulouse by night

The newest lighting technology offers a new and charming vision of the city's architectural treasures; the monuments and city features put on their evening wear to be seen as truly resplendent in a new light. Must sees: the Médiathèque José Cabanis , the Saint-Sernin Basilica and the Saint-Raymond museum , the banks of the Garonne river with the quay Saint-Pierre , the hydroelectric power station the Bazacle , the Pont des Catalans , the Pont Neuf and the Pont Saint-Pierre , the Modern and Contemporary Art Centre and the Abattoirs , the Halle aux Grains , the place du Capitole and the place Saint-Georges .

Air and space tourism

Toulouse is a city of diversity and culture that has successfully combined tradition and innovation. Its position as home of the second largest space centre allows for the following attractions: • Airbus-France

Tours

Tours for individuals (on foot, by coach) or Tours for groups (on foot, by coach)

The CANEUS Conference Organization Committee is willing to coordinate a number of group visits on several Conference days and time slots, depending on the demand of attendees. Tours for Individuals are scheduled weekly during the summer and can be joined without reservation for a minimum price, at the indicated time. These include:

•  Historic monuments and homes : “Le Capitole” (City Hall, Archives Tower and the Henri IV Courtyard), the Saint-Sernin Basilica (magnificent inheritance of the era of Counts of Toulouse), the Jacobins Monastery (Home of the Dominican order founded in 1275) and the Hotel de Bernuy (splendid residence of the wood merchant). Walking tour, e very day at 10:00 AM for approximately two hours. Every Thursdays in English at 2:30 PM.

•  Toulouse Past, Present and Future : A panoramic stroll through the great boulevards , the 16th century ramparts, the canals around the Ponts-Jumeaux and the Port de l'Embouchure, the Aerospace industry and the Hotel de Pierre (Renaissance and Baroque). Coach tour, with a circuit through the parks of the city, offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:00 PM for approximately two hours.

•  Heritage Treasures: The Sant-Sernin Basilica (Romanesque building with historical artistic features), The Notre-Dame du Taur Church (Beautiful gothic two-storey bell-tower wall, decorated with the mitre-shaped arches that are typical of Toulouse region), The Jacobins Monastery (made up of the church, the chapter house, the Saint-Antonin chapel and the cloister) and the Hotel de Bernuy (Finest example of renaissance art in Toulouse). Walking tour offered Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 PM for approximately two hours.

•  Toulouse by Light: Nocturnal coach tour that offers an unusual exploration of the city by night, enhanced by the creative lighting of the 'Plan Lumière ' (a blue line on the Garonne, historical monuments, Prairie des Filtres, etc.) Every Wednesday evening, starting at 10:00 PM for approximately two hours.

Group tours can benefit from the explanations and comments of a bilingual guide committed to the group for the time of the visit. All departures and enrollments take place at the Toulouse Tourist Office: in the “Capitole” Donjon, ( (33)05 61 11 02 22)

Cruises in Toulouse

Toulouse Croisières and Bateaux Toulousains offer you an original and pleasant way to discover the city on the Garonne , bringing you a different perspective of the emblematic sights of Toulouse in a comfortable and hospitable environment. Tourist taxis

For participants that will unfortunately not have the opportunity tospend leisure time in the city, this innovative tourist circuit offers you the chance to overview the city's main attractions, with accredited drivers and commentary. Tourist train

A 30 to 40 minute tour of Toulouse known as the “Ville Rose” including sights like the Capitole , the Basilica Saint-Sernin , Saint-Pierre des Cuisines , the banks of the Garonne , the Quai de la Daurade , the Promenade Henri Martin and the Hotel d'Assézat . Departures from rue Lafayette every day from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Outside of Toulose

For Conference participants who wish and have the opportunity and recreational time to discover the outskirts of the city and the innumerable sights that the region, Midi-Pyrénées offers the following information that may be useful in planning further travel arrangements.
